Identify what is being measured

Perimeter measures a boundary length, area measures a two-dimensional region, and volume measures three-dimensional space. A correct number with the wrong kind of unit does not answer the same question.

Build the formula from units

A rectangle’s area is length × width because it counts rows of equal square units. A cuboid adds a third dimension: its volume is the base area multiplied by height.

A mistake to avoid

Doubling every length does not merely double area or volume. A two-dimensional area scales by the square of the length factor, while a three-dimensional volume scales by its cube.

Worked example

Measure a 7 cm by 4 cm rectangle and a 3 cm-high box

The rectangle has area 7 × 4 = 28 cm² and perimeter 2 × (7 + 4) = 22 cm. A cuboid with that base and height 3 cm has volume 28 × 3 = 84 cm³.
