Help a child think through a STEM question

Practical ways for parents and educators to use questions, pictures, and everyday objects without taking over the learner’s thinking.

Find out which part is difficult

Read the question together and ask the learner to describe what it is asking. A difficult word, an unclear picture, and an unfamiliar calculation need different kinds of help. Give them time to show the part they understand before suggesting a method.

Try “What do you notice?” or “Which part would you like to understand?” If there is written working, ask what one line means. The aim is to find a useful starting point, not to check how quickly the learner can answer.

  • Check the meaning of the words in the question.
  • Ask what the learner has already tried.
  • Choose one uncertainty to explore first.

Give the idea something visible

Use a drawing or familiar objects when they show the relationship. Counters can represent equal groups. A number line can show order and distance. A labeled plant picture can connect a new word to a structure.

For fractions, identify the whole before comparing the parts. Two pictures only show a fair comparison when the wholes represent the same amount. Ask the learner what a piece represents, then connect the picture to the written fraction.

Keep decoration separate from explanation. A picture helps when the learner can point to the part that answers the question. If it introduces more symbols or details than the original problem, simplify it.

Offer one hint, then leave room to think

A small question can keep the next step with the learner. Ask “Could you put those into equal groups?” or “What changed between these two pictures?” Wait for the learner to try before offering another suggestion.

If the hint does not help, explain a smaller example together. Connect that example back to the original question rather than giving a sequence of instructions to copy. Keep the method consistent with the teacher’s guidance when the assignment requires one.

  • Ask about a relationship, not only the final answer.
  • Introduce one prompt at a time.
  • Let the learner use objects, a drawing, or words to respond.

Check the idea with one small change

Change the number, rearrange the objects, or choose another example. Ask what stays the same and what changes. A learner who can explain the relationship in the new situation is showing more than recall of the previous answer.

If the explanation becomes uncertain, return to the useful picture or example. Finish with one clear observation: what the learner can now show, describe, or check. There is no need to turn every conversation into a long lesson.

For educators: use the explanation to find the misconception

Prepare two contrasting examples that differ in one important way. Ask learners to explain the difference before teaching another procedure. Their explanations can reveal whether the difficulty concerns vocabulary, representation, or the underlying concept.

Keep the same learning question available through more than one response format. A learner might point to a diagram, write a sentence, or explain aloud. Review the subject accuracy and accessibility of any prepared material before using it with a group.

Keep an adult involved when using digital help

Choose a service that is appropriate for the learner and permitted by the school. Check an explanation before using it, especially if a picture or formula looks unfamiliar. Remove names and other unnecessary personal details from material shared with a service.
