A count represents how many
Match one number word to each object. The final number gives the quantity of the whole group, provided every object was counted once. Rearranging the objects changes their positions, not their number.
Compare quantity and order
You can match objects in two groups or compare their numbers. On an ordinary number line, numbers increase to the right. The symbols < and > record which number is smaller or larger.
A mistake to avoid
A row that spreads farther across a table does not necessarily contain more objects. Count or match the items rather than judging the amount from the space they occupy.
Worked example
Compare 12 and 15
Match 12 objects from one group with 12 from a group of 15. The second group has 3 left over, so 12 < 15. Rearranging either group leaves the comparison unchanged.
